We understand that our students exhibit all levels of ability and many may be afraid of their cameras. That’s why we concentrate on building confidence as much as we do knowledge.

Sarah wrote, “For someone like me, who previously used my digital camera on all automatic settings and was fearful of the ‘unknowns’ my camera had to offer, I find myself now in this wonderful place, feeling totally at ease with my camera and having the time of my life exploring and finding my own personal style.”

No matter what you like to photograph, we offer a curriculum of photography classes and outings to satisfy all levels of photographers, from digital camera classes and courses in photographic composition and exposure to courses in Photoshop Elements, nature photography workshops, and private photography lessons. You can even save money with our class combos.

A Focus on the Fundamentals

Learning the fundamental principles of photography is essential in preparing the student for the real world. We teach you how to think on your feet and set you up with a solid foundation that will enable you to photograph anything you want, whether that means photographing your children or your pets, or starting a business in children’s photography. We teach technical and creative photography techniques, as well as many advanced skills.

Our more advanced classes include classes in photographic exposure, Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, digital printmaking, and landscape and nature photography.

Peter, on the importance of learning the fundamentals: “I took several courses with Mike and I must say he provided me with just what I was looking for: a good basic foundation of understanding that I can use to develop my own technique and style. This is so much better than simple technical training which leads to just memorizing and mimicking someone else. When you truly comprehend what you are doing, you end up always prepared for dealing with the situation you face which leads to more satisfying results.”

Advanced Learning Methods & Teaching Techniques

Intuitive visual presentations and hands-on lessons are standard teaching tools at Creative Eye Workshops™. We’ve created customized graphics and insightful computer animations to help students more easily absorb the material. We even provide comprehensive class notes of each lecture, allowing students to re-read the material between sessions or long after the class is over. During each class, students also receive supplementary emails to help summarize or solidify recent lessons.

Practical Courses Structured for Busy Lives

Our photography curriculum is thoughtfully structured to fit into the lives of busy people, with practical and efficient courses that don’t require extended commitments. For instance, rather than offering single classes that extend for months at a time, we’ve broken down our curriculum into smaller, manageable, courses that better fit your busy life. Read about which classes we suggest.

The classes we’ve created are practical and efficient. That’s because we teach you what you need to know, when you need to know it, rather than frustrating you with tons of irrelevent information that you’re not ready for.

Gifted Photographer & Teacher

Mike MacDonald, the founder of Creative Eye Workshops™, has degrees in mathematics and physics, and careers in scientific programming and professional comedy. Self-taught, Mike like photography as a hobby. However, success came quickly, when just a year-and-a-half later, his photographs and how-to article about ice photography was nationally published in Outdoor Photographer Magazine. His photographs of Chicago nature have also been featured in the world-famous Sierra Club Wilderness Wall Calendar. Watch an interview with Mike on WTTW Chicago Tonight.

Nicole writes, “Mike was personable, easy-going and made everyone feel good about their level of knowledge and ability to learn the techniques. Great and energetic instructor.”

In addition to his photography, writing, and public speaking backgrounds, Mike received degrees in mathematics and physics, had a short career as a scientific computer programmer and a long career as a professional comedian. Mike uses these unique talents in his teaching. As a writer, comedian, and public speaker he is able to convey intimidating material in an organized and light-hearted manner. And, he uses this analytical and scientific side to break down complex information into easy-to-understand portions. Yet, if one word was required to describe Mike MacDonald, that word would be “passionate,” a passion that excites and inspires his students to be their best.
